Our Vision for Performing Arts
The Castle Newnham Performing Arts department aims to nurture passionate, imaginative and inquisitive individuals, who see the world from an artistic perspective, enjoying and exploring past and present art forms generated from an array of different cultures. Our subject areas are delivered through our belief that all young people should ‘learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist’ - every lesson champions this motto as we believe in order to be creative, you must first learn the foundations of knowledge to demonstrate high-quality skill.
Curriculum Intent
Through a well sequenced all through curriculum we prepare pupils from age 4 to 16 to become independent and creative individuals. A range of topics allow students to develop an understanding and appreciation of the arts formed in a contemporary society and throughout the world. These themes are explored through a range of different creative styles, practitioners and mediums. Furthermore, the Performing Arts curriculum promotes a sense of self-worth, encourages confidence, resilience and develops relationships.
The curriculum also provides students with an accurate knowledge of how the Performing Arts industry operates in today’s society. Additionally, the programme of study in performing arts throughout schooling places an emphasis on written expression and literacy, supporting students to write analytically about the Performing Arts, crafting critical responses and accurately employing subject related terminology.
All performing arts subjects (drama, music, dance and film) promote an overall appreciation of the arts both inside and outside of the classroom developing discipline, control and focus allowing them to grow into well rounded adults. Pupils are introduced to a range of opportunities to develop their expertise through extra-curricular activities including theatre productions, events, dance company and concerts within the local community allowing them to develop their professionalism within the Performing Arts sector. In addition to this, pupils are exposed to many opportunities to visit the theatre through a variety of trips annually to see professional productions locally, nationally and in London’s West End.
Special Educational Needs Disability (SEND) / Pupil Premium / Higher Attainers
All children will have Quality First Teaching. Any children with identified SEND or in receipt of pupil premium funding will have reasonable adjustments made that are additional to or different from their peers in order to support them to access the curriculum. All reasonable adjustments made are based around the individual and their needs.
As well as this, our school offers a demanding and varied curriculum, providing children with a range of opportunities in order for them to reach their full potential and consistently achieve highly from their starting points.
